History of Masjid Shaikhain

Masjid Shaikhain, also known as Masjid al-Dar'a, holds significant historical value as it marks the location where the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed on the eve of the Battle of Uhud on the 14th of Sha’ban, 3 AH (625 CE). This sacred site was pivotal in the preparations for the battle.

After leading the Jummah (Friday) prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set off towards Uhud, performing the Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers at this location. During this time, all Muslim inhabitants of Medina, including women and the elderly, gathered here. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) strategized the battle, inspected the troops, and selected the participants. Many young boys, eager to fight for Islam, joined the army, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent them back due to their age.

One of these boys, Rafe (may Allah be pleased with him), was supported by his father Khudaij (may Allah be pleased with him), who mentioned Rafe’s skill as an archer to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Rafe’ stood on his toes to appear taller, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed him to stay. Another boy, Samrah-bin-Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), challenged Rafe’s inclusion, claiming he could defeat him in a wrestling match. Upon proving his claim by winning the bout, Samrah was also permitted to join the army. Several other boys made similar efforts, with some succeeding in staying on.

A major setback occurred when Abdullah bin Ubai, the leader of the hypocrites, withdrew with his 300 followers, citing his disagreement with the battle strategy. This reduced the Muslim force from about 1,000 to a mere 700 against the Quraysh army of 3,000. Despite the shock and initial consideration of retreat by other tribes, the counsel of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the grace of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) restored their determination, and they marched towards Uhud shortly before dawn.

Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that some companions suggested killing the hypocrites who had returned, while others opposed this. This led to the revelation in the Quran: "Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties concerning the hypocrites?" [4:88]. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remarked, "Medina expels the bad persons from it, as fire expels the impurities of iron" [Bukhari].
